John Callaghan
Edmonton Alberta Canada
Bio: Welcome to my blog. I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I've lived in and traveled to most areas of this massive, beautiful country but have settled here in Edmonton for the past couple of decades. I have a degree in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta and I still live near the campus. I think reading and studying literature have, to a certain extent, given my existence meaning and context. I have recently discovered the joys of genre fiction and will discuss that, as well as a wide range of topics from mixed martial arts, to movies, to cable television, to current events, and whatever else catches my fancy (whoa, that's a weird expression). I will also feature some of my creative non-fiction and fiction writing. If you are here and reading this, I thank you for stopping by. Enjoy (I hope).
Sounds great. Looking forward to reading more.

I’m excited to follow your blog. I follow very few. You are an intriguing writer and I love the whole “don’t know whether to laugh or cry”. I feel that way soooo often and decided to make my blog mostly humorous and leave the cry part to myself in bed and not on my blog. But it’s certainly part of life so I love that you are integrating it.

Thanks. And thanks for dropping by. I really liked the post about your grandma but I usually don’t comment right away. I like to get a feel for a blog before I open my giant pie hole.

Why aren’t you posting? You are one of few I follow because I like your style. But you haven’t posted since the little girl survived the plane crash. What’s going on in your life, John?!

I know! I’m sorry. I just got busy and what not. I am posting tomorrow and will be back to posting at least twice a week.

i really liked your comments about the Simpsons and the trampoline at Behind the White Coat and decided to pop along and am enjoying your blog. I am often on the other side of the white coat as a patient. While trampolines can be dangerous, I broke my foot walking on grass despite going skiing last year and not falling over once. Sometimes you can only laugh at life xx Rowena

I appreciate it, John! I bet you and Colette can read between the lines of this post https://familyanswersfast.wordpress.com/2014/09/20/run-fall-on-your-face-get-up-repeat-encouragment/ . Why all the anger? Exactly. And why the need to transform how I think, feel, act? Exactly again. So thank you for your amazing honesty and articulation about matters close to the heart, especially the heart of a child. It’s so encouraging to know that we are never alone in our struggle and that each day brings with it new opportunities for wholeness.

Your life sounds more interesting than mine, but I did have a cousin who was an axe murderer. She got all the attention in the family.

An axe murderer? I bet she got all the attention. Who did she kill?

She did. God forbid, she killed her children. It was long before I was born. I didn’t know her, but I certainly used her story to my advantage when I was an evil little kid. Will send you link.

Oh, and Mat Foley is by far my favourite SNL character. “I am thrice divorced.” is still one the greatest lines in comedy.

I don’t know when you’ll see this but want to mention, if you don’t know it, there’s a DVD documentary “I am Chris Farley” that came out in 2015 that was really interesting. Hearing his family in particular talk about him.

Thank you so much Shana but this week I’m in Las Vegas for a work thing and likely will barely have time to keep up with reading blogs. But thank you.

LOL usually autocorrect calls me “Shaman”… which is a glorious title and all, but I don’t think I’ve quite earned it.
Eh, if you ever get the inkling… it was a fun exercise, and I’ve had a good spike in readership today, and a couple new follows! 😀

Hey John, hope all is well! I am not blogging at the present and totally meant to sign up to get a few blogs sent to my email and life just got in the way. I followed you by email today so I hope to do some catching up on your humor!! I’ve missed it! Shoot me an email anytime at hamarquess@gmail.com in the meantime. I have zero time to keep up on my blog. I was not fully prepared for the shit storm of work that a second class would mean for me, not to mention I spend every evening at some sporting event or another. Yesterday we had twelve straight hours of sports. Junior high girls volleyball tournament and peewee football game on the evening for the 6th grader. Just saying that makes me thirsty, time for a beer!!

I know you’ll never take me up on this, but I so admire your blog, and I nominated you to participate in a quotation challenge. Even if you don’t participate, here’s the link to my post explaining it:
https://dearlilyjune.wordpress.com/2015/10/15/in-others-words-in-which-its-day-two-of-the-three-day-quotation-challenge/
And here’s what I said about your blog (in case you don’t want to go to mine to read it!):
John Callaghan of Get Off My Lawn–He claims that studying literature has given his “existence meaning and context.” Oh yeah, John? Prove it. Show us some quotations. (Sorry for the familiarity, sir. I didn’t mean to metaphorically tromp across your grass.)

Hahaha. First off thank you. Secondly I’ve been to your blog and have enjoyed. You are a good writer. I will take up your challenge but I won’t be able to start until Sat. Thanks again for visiting.
